President Trump stepped up the controversy this morning by claiming on Twitter the Obama Administration wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential election. “Although it is unclear exactly what transpired to prompt Trump to accuse his predecessor of monitoring him Saturday morning, the president may have been referring to an article published Friday by Breitbart analyzing a claim from conservative radio host Mark Levin alleging that the Obama administration applied for two Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) requests in 2016 — the vague purpose of those requests was reportedly to monitor Trump.” reports Lifezette.com
Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for former President Obama issued a carefully and specifically worded statement regarding President Trump’s allegations, which raised even more questions than it answered. It stated that “neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen.”
This statement failed to confirm or deny the FBI or Department of Justice wiretaps on communications to and from Trump Tower during the 2016 election. The wiretaps are confirmed to have happened as stated in the New York Times piece below, but what is shady, is whether the taps continued after clearing the Trump Campaign of communicating with Russia , or whether Obama was involved and when.
To further fuel speculation, former speech writer for the Obama Administration Jon Favreau tweeted out to “be careful about reporting that Obama said there was no wiretapping.” Seemingly admitting to the wiretapping’s existence, but denying any Obama involvement.
Whether the taps continued or not isn’t the only issue with Lewis’ statement. Denying Obama ever ordered surveillance of any U.S. citizen is just plain false. In 2013, the Obama Department of Justice wiretapped Fox News reporter James Rosen, pulled his phone records and his parent’s, and even his personal emails without charging him with a crime. Not only was James Rosen a victim of Obama’s authoritarian impulse, but reporters from the AP’s phone records were also pulled in a separate case by the Obama DOJ. The Obama administration has pursued more leak investigations under the 1917 Espionage Act than all previous administrations combined.
To think President Obama is incapable of irresponsibly and even possibly illegally wiretapping then Republican Nominee Trump, is nothing short of naive. History shows otherwise.
Liberal pundits and journalists immediately took up arms in defense of the Obama Administration, claiming Trump was providing no evidence.
Even Ben Rhodes, former Foreign Policy Adviser for Obama, came to his defense on Twitter.
Ben Rhodes is also known for lying to the public about the Iran Deal, creating a echo chamber in D.C. and the media to sell a false narrative.
So what do we know so far about the Trump Tower wiretaps?
