On Tuesday afternoon, in a shocking but expected move, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Calls for the director to be fired were echoed across both parties during the 2016 presidential campaign after his press conference regarding Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails and private server, and his October letter to congress stating they found new emails, that many Democrats blame for the loss of Clinton’s candidacy.
Press Secretary Sean Spicer released this statement:
Today, President Donald J. Trump informed FBI Director James Comey that he has been terminated and removed from office. President Trump acted based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“The FBI is one of our Nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” said President Trump.
A search for a new permanent FBI Director will begin immediately.
Here are the letters by President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein:
The Democrats are up in arms over the firing as FBI Director James Comey was the head of the Russian interference probe that Democrats were relying on in their opposition to Donald Trump. Some call the timing fishy and calls for a special prosecutor are stronger than ever, though the past Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testified under oath that there was no connection between the Russians and Trump just this week.
Democrats were calling for James Comey’s head just last year and rightfully so, as the Republicans echoed the sentiment. His handling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal was unprofessional, highly politicized, and his shielding of then Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s gross misconduct was obvious.
His incompetence was only bolstered during his testimony this week to congress when he grossly overstated evidence in his case about Huma Abedin’s mishandling of Hillary Clinton’s emails, causing the FBI to send a letter clarifying:
The FBI sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday stating that just a “small number” of such emails were forwarded. The letter also stated that “most of the emails found on Mr. Weiner’s laptop computer related to the Clinton investigation occurred as a result of a backup of personal electronic devices, with a small number a result of manual forwarding by Ms. Abedin to Mr. Weiner.”
This was the right move, as many people we calling for Comey to be fired on both sides of the aisle. Trump will pay the political price for this in an already highly political circus that is the “Russia investigation”. Democrats will undoubtedly suggest that Trump fired Comey to cover up some sort of Russian connection; Republicans will say that Trump fired Comey thanks to Comey’s wild incompetence. We’ll see how it pans out.
